What Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Jiu Jitsu is a martial art which focuses on grappling, with ground fighting being a major component of the style. We use body weight, gravity and momentum to defend ourselves even when physically outmatched. Proper technique is key and learning from experienced teachers is essential to progress. With training, students not only learn to defend themselves in the real world, but also gain physical fitness, confidence and mental concentration skills as well.

About us

Our goal is to make Jiu Jitsu accessible to everyone, regardless of your age, shape or activity level. Conveniently located in Delaware County, just minutes from Philadelphia, our team of experienced trainers is ready to guide you into a lifelong pursuit of physical fitness, mental toughness and community.

Get in Shape! Physically AND Mentally Jiu Jitsu is a skill that parallels life - faced with challenging situations, you need to stay calm, problem solve and execute your response effectively. We teach our students these lessons in every class.

“Every person to ever walk onto the mats was a beginner at some point. We understand that the hardest thing in Jiu Jitsu, is making it through the door on your 1st day! We will devote 100% of our energy, to ensure you feel comfortable and safe!”

- Matt Kelley, Owner of Vault

Even if you’ve never once stepped foot on a mat, you can feel confident and comfortable coming to our classes. With day and evening classes, weekday and weekend, there’s sure to be a slot that fits perfectly into your schedule.

Check back regularly for updates on our roster of international world class competitors who will be visiting as guest instructors every month.

Gi

In Gi classes you will wear a traditional “Gi” or Jiu Jitsu kimono. You’ll use your skills to overpower opponents and even use their Gi to grab hold and gain the advantage over them. From learning how to escape a hold to how to pin your opponent, this class will give you all the tools you need to grow your Jiu Jitsu skills.

NoGi

NoGi Jiu Jitsu simply means no “Gi” or no traditional kimono uniform. Unlike in Gi, you won’t be taught to grab the uniform at any time to execute moves. Instead, you and your other classmates will wear rash guards and board shorts (think basic surfer attire) and will employ similar classic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu moves in order to escape, block, defend, grab and pin your opponent.

Kids Classes

Our kids classes are broken into two separate age groups: ages 5-8 and ages 9-12. Both groups start out slowly and safely and our instructors, trained in teaching youth, will walk them through the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It’s a great way to naturally build self-esteem, self-respect, patience and problem-solving skills in kids — in a very fun way. We make our classes safe, fun and approachable so students will enjoy being in class every week as they learn and progress.

Women’s Introductory Lessons

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is most certainly not just for the guys. Women can benefit from the many perks of the practice, including weight loss, stress relief, self defense skills and body confidence. Women aren’t often encouraged to grapple or be aggressive in our everyday life. Here in our classes, we shed those gender roles and give you the techniques to dominate your opponent AND your life. Come give us a try!

FAQ

Check Out the FAQ

Do I need to be in shape to try Jiu Jitsu?

You don’t need to be strong, muscular or even thin to begin practicing Jiu Jitsu. With continual practice, you will get stronger, more coordinated, gain endurance and shed pounds. We encourage everyone to go at their own pace. Just like any exercise program, it’s always best to check with your doctor to make sure it’s safe for you personally, before taking a class.

Am I too old?

Probably not! There are seniors in their 80s still practicing Jiu Jitsu, so you most likely aren’t too old. You don’t need to be physically fit either. That will come with training. For people who are older, Jiu Jitsu can offer better coordination, balance and core strength, all important factors in determining how healthy and active we remain as we age. To be safe, check with your doctor before starting any workout regime.

Do I have to compete?

Absolutely not. Competitions can be fun for many people to meet their goals and prove themselves, but they are 100% optional and most students prefer to just practice for the physical and mental benefits of Jiu Jitsu and for the fun, supportive environment of the classes, rather than to compete.

How do I prepare for my first class?

There’s really not much prep work to do. Come to your first class with an open mind, ready to learn and you’ll do just fine! Just remember our purpose here is to help you! Gi uniforms are available and we suggest wearing a rash guard on top and spandex shorts underneath.

Is Jiu Jitsu safe?

Jiu Jitsu is an extremely safe sport and is a martial arts form with some of the fewest injuries. Because we are not punching or kicking and moves are focused more on grappling at ground level, there are far fewer impact injuries. We also go a step further to personally make safety a key focus of our classes.
